Daisy
Daisy, the name she grew up with in Toronto, believed she was the daughter of Neil and Melanie, the owners of a second-hand clothing store called The Clothes Hound. Her childhood was marked by a sense of being an outsider, a feeling she could not articulate. She noticed that her parents were overly careful with her, as if she were breakable, and that there were no baby pictures of her—Melanie claimed they had all been lost in a fire. This lack of a documented past created a subtle but persistent unease in Daisy, a feeling that she was not quite real, like a forgery or a fake antique. She was a bright and athletic student at the Wyle School, but her social life was constricted by her parents' anxiety, which she found frustrating and overprotective.
Discovery of Her True Identity
Daisy's world shattered on her sixteenth birthday. After she defied her parents' orders and attended a protest march against Gilead—an act that was captured on television—a car bomb killed Neil and Melanie. Daisy was rescued by Ada, a family friend, and taken to a safe house. There, Elijah, another Mayday operative, revealed the truth: Neil and Melanie were not her parents, and she was not Daisy. She was Baby Nicole, the infant smuggled out of Gilead years ago, whose image had been used as a propaganda symbol by both Gilead and its enemies. The revelation was a profound shock, a sinkhole that swallowed her entire past. She learned that her biological mother was a Handmaid who had escaped, and that her official father was a high-ranking Gilead Commander. The murder of Neil and Melanie, she was told, was a direct consequence of Gilead's relentless search for her.
Training and Infiltration
Faced with the knowledge that her existence had put everyone she loved at risk, Daisy agreed to a dangerous plan. Mayday's contact within Gilead, a mysterious figure known only as "the source," had demanded that Baby Nicole herself be the one to retrieve a cache of incriminating documents. Daisy was trained by Ada and Garth, a young Texan volunteer. She learned self-defense, including how to throw a heartstopper punch and how to gouge eyes, and was drilled in the prayers and customs of Gilead. She was given a scarified tattoo on her left forearm that read "GOD" and "LOVE," which was to serve as a marker for the Pearl Girls. Disguised as a homeless street person named Jade, she was "rescued" by the Pearl Girls in Toronto, who believed they were converting a lost soul. She was then flown to Gilead and presented at the Thanks Giving ceremony at Ardua Hall as a new convert.
Life at Ardua Hall and the Mission
Inside Ardua Hall, Daisy, now known as Jade, was a poor fit. She was assigned to live with two young Supplicant Aunts, Agnes (Aunt Victoria) and Becka (Aunt Immortelle). Her irreverent attitude, her swearing, and her physical workouts clashed with the strict, pious atmosphere. She found the food disgusting and the rules stifling. She was present at a Particicution, where she witnessed two men being torn apart by Handmaids, an experience that was both gruesome and terrifying. It was during this time that Aunt Lydia, the powerful head of Ardua Hall, revealed herself to be the Mayday source. She summoned Daisy to her office, made a small incision in her GOD/LOVE tattoo, and inserted a microdot containing a vast archive of evidence documenting the crimes of Gilead's elite. Daisy was now a carrier pigeon, her body the vessel for the information that could bring down the regime.
Escape and Reunion
When Commander Judd discovered Daisy's true identity as Baby Nicole and planned to marry her, Aunt Lydia orchestrated a desperate escape. Daisy and Agnes, disguised as Pearl Girls, fled Ardua Hall, knocking out Aunt Vidala in the process. They traveled by car, bus, and pickup truck to the coast, where they were taken by boat to the Nellie J. Banks, a fishing schooner. The journey was fraught with danger: a coast guard inspection, engine trouble, and a terrifying night in an inflatable boat in the fog and high tides of the Bay of Fundy. Daisy, suffering from a fever and an infected arm, rowed alongside Agnes until they were thrown onto the shore of Nova Scotia. They were rescued by Ada and Garth and taken to a refugee medical center. There, Daisy was reunited with her biological mother, who had been waiting for her. The microdot was extracted and its contents released to the media, triggering the Ba'al Purge and the beginning of the end for Gilead. Daisy's transformation from a confused teenager into a courageous operative who helped topple a totalitarian state is the central arc of her story.
